Best Unique Halloween Costumes for 2010

Are you planning on being a Twilight character for Halloween this year?  How about Avatar? Alice in Wonderland?  If so, think again!  The last thing you will want to do this Halloween is show up for a party in a cookie-cutter costume, matching a bunch of the other guests there. Be original!

Below is my list for the seven most creative and unique Halloween costumes for 2010, in no particular order.  {Why seven? Because ten was too many and five was too few.}

Betty White

This is one super lady who just keeps on kicking.  She is closing in on 90 and is more popular than ever.

Dressing as Betty White would be really unique and could be done on the cheap.  All you’d need is a white old lady wig, makeup to give yourself some wrinkles, an old lady outfit from the thrift store (think blue and white floral sweater with matching slacks), and a Snickers bar!  Be sure to rub some dirt or paint on your sweater and face to make it look like you got hit!

Hit Girl from Kick Ass

The movie Kick Ass took me by surprise this year and was unexpectedly funny.  My favorite character was Mindy Macready (a.k.a. Hit Girl), the witty, gun wielding, ass kicking child.  It wasn’t necessarily the hit of the year, but I think many people will recognize the costume, especially if you opt for the Hit Girl look.

The Mindy look is super simple.  Everyone has a white button down shirt they can wear with a black and red striped tie.  A thrifted plaid skirt and large fake gun from a costume store would tie the look together.  The Hit Girl look is more over the top, but so worth it.  A purple plaid skirt and purple shiny jacket can sadly probably be found at a thrift store.  Embellish a wide pink ribbon with the HG logo for a belt.  Tie on a black cape, wear a black eye mask, and top it all off with a purple wig!  With some savvy shopping, you can definitely do it for cheaper than $80.

LOST characters

Halloween this year is a perfect time to pay tribute to the series end of LOST by creating a costume of your favorite character.  While many characters would be doable, some would be easier than others.

Locke would be an obvious choice since he is well recognized and you might have many of the items laying around the house.  An earth-tone shirt, cargo khakis, backpack, and bald head cap are really the only necessary items.  Add a faux hunting knife and a large cut/scar over your right eye to really complete the ensemble.

Another option is Daniel Faraday.  Again, everyone has a button down white shirt that would work.  Beyond that, all you’d need is a skinny black tie, some face paint for the facial hair, and possibly a wig if you don’t have that style or color.

This guy looked great for a LOST series finale party, and you can too this Halloween!

Snooki from Jersey Shore

You could really dress as anyone from Jersey shore, but the most recognizable would probably be Snooki.  The Situation is more popular, but unless you are Italian with abs of steel, it would be difficult to pull off.  For Snooki, all you’ll need are some really short shorts, a skanky top, some gaudy sunglasses, and a silly trucker cap.  Piece of cake!

Alan Garner from The Hangover

Zach Galifianakis’s character in the Hangover was perhaps the most memorable movie character of last year.  My cousin even gave part of the “One Man Wolf Pack” speech in his toast at his sister’s wedding this year!

All you would need is the beard, the t-shirt, the sunglasses, and the satchel (from a thrift store).  Don’t forget to wrap your left hand with an ace bandage from where you cut yourself in your blood brothers pact.  Kick it up a notch and thrift or borrow a baby carrier and baby doll to have your own little baby Bjorn!

Check out this guy who pulled off the look fantastically!

Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress

We’ve all seen the crazy meat dress that Lady Gaga wore to the VMA’s this year:

{FYI, she was NOT the first to do so! Jia Jem made a meat dress back in 2009 out of salami and bacon.}

Now, I am not suggesting you go craft yourself a dress out of meat.  That would be expensive, wasteful, and quite stinky!  But, it seems like this look could be easily accomplished by printing out photos of meat on inkjet fabric and stitching them together to make a dress.  You could also make your own custom meat fabric at Spoonflower.com in 42″ wide quilting weight cotton for about $18 per yard.

The Old Spice Man

If you are a black man with abs, there really is no other costume choice for you.  This is it.  Isaiah Mustafa will be your claim to Halloween party fame.

All you need is a white towel wrapped around your waist and a bottle of Old Spice to carry around.  Be sure to wear some shorts under the towel, just in case! ;-)

If you end up using any of these ideas, please send me a picture so I can live vicariously through you feature it here.
