House Tweaking

This will quite possibly be the most boring and unflattering blog post you will ever feast your eyes upon, but I figured I’d share since it might help someone with similar problems.

Our first issue was that Eddie discovered how to open our garbage can, and it has become one of his favorite activities to mosey into the kitchen while we are somewhere else and try to get at whatever he can in there.

Our solution was a $6 contraption we found at Bed, Bath, & Beyond which inconspicously hangs on the inside of your cabinet…

And holds plastic grocery bags!

We can now reuse plastic shopping bags instead of buying garbage bags, and we don’t have to worry about Eddie dragging dirty napkins all over the house!

The second issue we had was that the dog food bags we buy (40-60 lb bags at a time) are humongous and difficult to close.  If we put it on the floor, Eddie tries to get into it, and if we put it on top of the laundry machine, it’s awkward to scoop the food out {not to mention an eyesore}!

You can see the bag on top of the dryer on the left as well as the miscellaneous crap scattered everywhere.  Enter a $6 plastic bin from Target:

The bin can hold half a bag of food discretely under the utility sink and we can put the other half, tightly sealed, in the garage until it’s time to refill the bin.

It’s not an earth-shattering revelation, but it works for us!  Who knew you had to dog proof a house?!

For the record, things I still want to do in the laundry room:

  • Find a rolling laundry storage cart skinny enough to fit between the machines
  • DIY a countertop for over the top of the machines
  • Make a sink skirt
  • Add some artwork/accessories
  • Find a place to store our steam mop

Have a great Friday, everyone!

I feel ya on the 60lb bags of dog food. 🙂 We have two containers tucked into the spare bedroom closet, one for each dog. At PetCo/PetSmart they carry ones big enough to hold the whole bag, in case you are interested in that instead of having to store half. They stand upright though, not sure if that’s an issue. Just FYI.

We use trash bins that roll out from under the cabinets. It’s the best purchase I think I’ve ever made. I don’t think there’s a trash can in the world that our dogs wouldn’t find a way into eventually!

We use big bins like that too for our dog food. We have to have 4 of them though since we have 3 big dogs and 2 different kinds of food … I envy that you only need one 😉

    I always wanted a dog… 🙂

  4. @Veronica: I saw those at Petsmart… I actually bought like 4 dog food bins trying to find one that fit under the utility sink and they all ended up being too wide or too tall… so I returned them all, lol

@Kate: Ohhh I have seen roll out trash cans, those are pretty sweet! We may invest in one of those someday…

Yeah….it depends on where you want to put it. Luckily we’ve always been able to hide them away in the closet. And cause our dogs eat different food we have to have two. :-/ Oh well. The price we pay for our pets.
